Memo from Newsweek

Sorry.

Our bad.

In our haste to uncover the next "Abu Ghraib" story, boost our sagging readership and maybe garner a Pulitzer, we took a few short cuts. We went to press with the same shoddy, half-assed fact-checking that has characterized much of the mainstream media of late.

Anyway, looks like a bunch of people died as a result. Sixteen from the latest account, with another hundred or so injured.

Sorry about that. Newsweek regrets any inconvenience to the dead and their families.

Well okay, that was a paraphrase, but it captures the gist of it.

Newsweek Lied, People Died.

Congressional hearings should be called. Hell, if we make baseball players testify about their use of performance enhancing drugs, shouldn't we be able to question journalists whose biased reporting results in the death of 15 civilians and damage to the war effort?

I'm not defending Newsweek, because what they did was inexcusable, sloppy journalism at its worst, but
let's be real. The real culprits are those rioters who are ultra-sensitive about their religion (read "zealots"). I could never imagine Christians getting so riled up if someone threw some Gideon bibles into a toilet.

We're in this war because of shoddy fact-checking. Doubt we'll ever get an apology letter for that one.

Tracy, the reporter for Newsweek, Michael Ishikoff, was well aware that the desecration of the Koran is punishable by death in many areas. That's why this was his money quote.

The fact that he relied on one source rather than corroborating with others to validate is a violation one learns in Journalism 101. It was inexcusable.

Roger, a bit of a stretch there, isn't it?

I mean you are comparing one reporter with the intelligence operatives of several nations.

Gotta get over it, Rog! Try reading "My Pet Goat"!

I'm going to get over it by reading the Koran.

And then flushing it.

They were wrong, and I am sure someone will pay by getting the axe.
Now proposing congressional hearings is a bit much. That's the only thing that comes to mind that warrants a hearing?

How about a hearing on why voters were in line for 8 hours in Ohio? I'm not suggesting the election was fixed. I am suggesting we have major issues with voting in this country.

How about a hearing on the false intelligence reports that got us into this war?

How about a hearing on the california energy crisis and/or Enron?

How a bout a hearing on Halliburton and some of the ways they mismanaged funds in Iraq?

How about a hearing on what's been done domestically to make us safer from terrorism since 9-11?

How about a hearing on how much brush has been cleared in Crawford?

Sorry, Godzilla. The Newsweek retraction proves the left is wrong and the Cynical Nation is redeemed on all fronts.

Exposing election fraud committed by Democrats, for example, is incisive investigative journalism, while asking why some stand in eight hour lines is merely wimpy lefty moonbat whining.

And as far as investigating Enron's role in the California energy crisis.. don't you know that is something that Paul Krugman wrote about and it has been scientifically proven on this blog that Paul Krugman has his head up his ass.

So, no, Godzilla.. all the matters you cite are not worth investigating. You really got to get over it.

yeah what was I thinking.

Well, forget Abu Ghraib, and the circulation numbers too, but the possibility of the Pulitzer may still exist.

I have no doubt that the Koran has been desecrated by some interrogators. The fact that people went idiotic over a brief mention of it in a magazine indicates that it may be an effective tactic in quizzing Muslim prisoners of war. Just because people went nuts doesn't mean that the Newsweek story was erroneous. It was such an ordinary event that no one even thought twice about colloborating the story.

Make that "corroborating"; why don't these blogs allow edits?
